W is for WEATHER

Wiltshire College Lackham maintains the Lacock Weather
Station with a continuous record going back to 1947.

The information taken from the instruments is sent to the Met Office
and is also used by the College's students, the Environment
Agency and a number of other organisations. The information
has a long-term use in monitoring weather, rather
than in making forecasts.

On display at the Museum is an outdoor interpretation display
explaining the function of weather observation and information
on temperature and rainfall is updated on a monthly basis
for visitors' interest. It also records extreme weather since 1947.

Currently the records stand at:

Highest maximum daily temperature: 35.2 ° C, August 1990.
Lowest minimum daily temperature: -19.5 ° C, January 1982.

Greatest monthly rainfall: 186.6mm,
April 2000. (Annual rainfall measured 1016mm!)
