V is for VILLAGE PUMP

Most of us take for granted the supply of water accessed through
water pipes and taps into our homes. The idea of sharing your
water supply with others and having to prime and physically
pump out water for your daily use is a concept remote
from modern day living.

In order to link the processes of washday, particularly
for school groups, a hand-operated water pump was installed.
This allows children to participate in actual wash-day work
with hard soap, a dolly peg and tub, washboard, mangle
and flat iron. A tough contrast when set alongside today's
modern washing machines and electric steam irons.
