S is for SHEPHERD'S LAMBING HUT

Once a common sight on Salisbury Plain, this example of a
shepherd's lambing hut was rescued from dereliction and
brought to the Museum for restoration in 2000.

Working from contemporary photographs the hut was furnished
with floorboards and a stable door made from oak from the
Lackham estate; a chimney flue was shaped and fitted by the
College welder and a slatted wooden bunk-bed was made by volunteers
to accompany sacking filled with straw to complete the ‘comforts'
of a shepherd's life.

A local coach driver kindly made and donated a number of ash gate
hurdles, a craft skill passed to him by his father. These
surround the hut that is now accessible to visitors.

Frequently at special events, one of the Museum volunteers
Patrick Coggan can be seen at the door complete with a
replica Wiltshire smock and neckerchief!
