R is for REYBRIDGE WATERWHEEL
The Reybridge watermill was situated on the banks
of the River Avon just half a mile downstream from the Museum.
The waterwheel on view at the Museum is an example of one
used in agriculture for many years as a cheap and fairly reliable
source of power. One of the major drawbacks for the farmer was
that he had to bring the work to the power supply whereas with a
steam engine, which replaced many waterwheels, the power
could be brought to the work.
The Museum's waterwheel is an overshot type as it is powered
from water gushing onto it from above. It now forms part of
a working demonstration.
