K is for KING HENRY VIII

In 1535, King Henry VIII visited Robert & Anne Baynard
at their Lackham estate and with his retinue stayed for several days.
It may well have been convenient for him to be at Lackham whilst
“paying his addresses” at the same time to Jane
Seymour (his future Queen) of Wolf's Hall near Marlborough.

Upon hearing of Henry's intention of staying at Lackham, the banqueting
hall of Lackham House was ‘newly floored with the massive oak of the
estate'. Preparations for the King's visit were comically captured in a
contemporary print ‘with the rats and mice running away from the housemaids, who with mops and broom, are making all things clean and trim for the royal quest'.

(Quotations taken from ‘The Manor of Lackham its owners and
some historical connections' by Tony Pratt)

Today King Henry's visit is commemorated by a sizeable costumed
giant made by College staff and students which was paraded
around Lacock as part of the Millennium celebrations.
It can now be seen in the Museum.
