G is for GRANARY
Lackham is fortunate to have two traditional Wiltshire
granaries which today house Museum displays.
They are named after their original locations from which they
were removed to the Lackham site. Both of the granaries,
the Chalfield and Longleat, were donated to the Museum and
differ in date and construction. The Longleat Granary is
thought to be the oldest of the two with its brick and timber
framework and a thatched roof, whilst the Chalfield
Granary is constructed of lateral timber weather-boarding
capped by a slate roof.
Housed in the Longleat Granary is a display of objects relating
to grain processing, its trade and an excellent collection of grasses.
The Chalfield now features a washday display complete with instruments
of domestic torture such as the washday tub, dolly peg and mangle.
Did you know that staddle stones, upon which both granaries are
perched, were used to stop hungry rodents and dampness from
the ground damaging the grain?
